Politics of Dirt

“Somoza may be a son of a bitch, but he’s OUR son of a bitch.”

– FDR about Nicaraguan dictator, Anastasio Somoza.

One of the most common practices in the United States foreign policy is the alliance we promote, defend, fund and impose. This might be referred as the “alliance of shame” based on a system of “politics of dirt.” The system behind this practice seems to work like this; those agents that have all kinds of skeletons on their closets make our dirty job in exchange for our protection as long as they play our game. In that way we can say, the US aspires to get collaboration from the most corrupt and criminals figures to advance our foreign policy.

As many already know, the US is famous for supporting the most corrupt, repressive, and even criminal monarchies, regimes and dictatorship on the world, even before they take power – or rather, before they are put in power. In the case of Latin America, the US has allowed itself to engage with well known criminals such as Manuel Noriega and Alvaro Uribe. Indeed, Alvaro Uribe was a drug lord wanted by the FBI who was taken off the wanted list to put him as president of Colombia.

The US has backed the bloodiest dictatorships like Pinochet, Strossner,Anastasio Somoza and the Argentinian junta. Nowadays with so much information leaked in case such as the Wikileaks, the Edward Snowden revelations and the Panama papers, multiple prominent figures of Latin American came to light on their wrong doings and their bold treason against their own countries. So far, in all of these cases the main corrupt and criminals figures happen to be those who the US promote. Furthermore, many of them came out to be fully involved in acting as agents for the US.

What is amazing on those leaks, is that in many cases the whole reason for the US to be interested on those players is precisely their dirty record. Pena Nieto, president of Mexico, before becoming head of the state was well known among the US intelligence as being an extremely corrupt politician. In Venezuela, almost all the right wing opposition has been fully engaged with the US at the point of getting millions from agencies such as the NED, IRI, USAID, among others. The Assembly man Henry Ramos Allup, was recognized by the US embassy as being a “rude person.”

Aside of intelligence leaks on those controversial figures, even before that, these people already had a dirty and even criminal record. For example, Ramos Allup is well known for the main role in one of the bloodiest governments of that country. In fact, Ramos Allup was a key figure on the killing of thousands of Venezuelans in 1989 during the “Caracazo” massacre. However, Ramos Allup is far from being the only personality covered with dirt and blood. In any case, almost all of those players are fully backed by the US despite being deeply linked with corruption and criminal organizations such as paramilitary groups in Colombia.

With the Panama papers, the number one politician involved in fiscal evasion is the current president of Argentina, Mauricio Macri. Disregarding the Panama papers that has Macri as the most corrupt politician, still, Macri was well known for illegal practices at the point that he is still under multiple judicial procedures pending. Also, after the illegal cup in Brazil, the de facto head the of coup, Michel Temer, he and almost all of his allies, were fully involved in massive corruption.

This is just a small sample of the multiple US ally politicians that have a dirty and even bloody record, but it is for that reason that the US chose them to represent and advance our interests on those countries.
